Wednesday 12 June

Got up at 8 so took cup of tea down to the pool so as still to be out by 8.30 target.  Had 50 lengths swim then breakfast then lazy day by the pool.  Slow progress continued on cross stitch.  Also read over half of Stephen King book Dolores Claibourne. Clouds came over just before sun disappeared.  Had shower and went to shop to replenish breakfast supplies and then went into town to eat.  Walked right round again taking photos of new bits including new Dim Elit Hotel,  huge grey monstrosities attached to what was Swiss Hotel and a dreadful monstrosity of a delicatessen called gourmet garage.  Found the Mercan pizza restaurant relocated in road up from post box so went there and had lovely vegetarian pizza with mixed salad on the house to start.  Took a long time to drink the beer with it - felt dizziness was lurking but luckily it held off. Read my Stuart McBride book on my phone.  Also saw Kate in there and she came over to chat.  She had just paid deposit on new house near 5-a-side football pitch.  Came back and had coffee and liqueur and bought oriel a drink and sat and chatted with her till midnight.

(click here for short, 2-page version pdf!) Doesn’t time fly! It seems no time at all since I was composing last year’s letter. What a gorgeous summer we had - the heatwave seemed to go on for ever and I spent many a happy hour sitting in the garden - as did Suki! As expected, Mary (Mike’s mum) passed away on 13th December last year - nearly 5 weeks after she first took to her bed and stopped eating.  Everyone at Tracey House was so good with her, caring for her and keeping her comfortable. They also took care of everything at the end which was very helpful. We were fortunate to be able to have the funeral before Christmas so it wasn’t hanging over until the new year. Mary had written down her wishes for hymns and readings and even a potted history for the eulogy! It was very easy to organise, even from a distance. Saturday 1 February

Mike went off ringing QPs and I went to Denham to do 7-mile Colne Valley circular walk I had stumbled across when researching New Year's Day canal walk.  Walking by 9.10.  Took me four and a half hours because went slightly wrong in the woods and then decided to research possible short cut for future, and also because unable to get under railway bridge at Ickenham due to floods so had to do long detour.  Lovely morning - clear and sunny and not too cold although the wind was somewhat chill.  Underfoot was extremely muddy and often deep in water - luckily boots were up to it.  Had blisters under both feet by the end.  Also found I had burrs sticking to my ear muffs - but only after I had been talking to people whilst completely unaware of this. Got home and changed bedding and did washing.  Then had lovely hot shower and got into comfies for the evening.  Did cross stitch and watched England being beaten by France at Rugby in the last few minutes.  Had pate from Son Ferrer market fo

The last three weeks of "old normal" Life

Although we didn't know it at the time, we were heading for the great Coronavirus pandemic when life changed for everyone across the globe.  At the time of writing this blog we are still in it, and we do not know what the "new normal" life will be like.  I have decided to do a separate blog for this strange time as it was so different from "Life".  Whether I shall return to "Life" or start another new chapter after it is all over, I do not know yet. I was back in London for about 3 weeks before my next Devon visit.  I went to the Dentist to get my broken tooth fixed.  They suggested a temporary fix and a consultation with their root canal specialist with a view to clearing out the low level infection that had been present for many years under the tooth and then have a crown.  I had the fix first - £350.  I was very pleased with it.  It turned out that it was just the cosmetic bit of the filling that had broken off, and the filling itself was intact, so
