Wednesday

Got up early.  Andy and Judy took suki out as bank here still too high for me to get out.  Went to try and negotiate with lock keeper but no joy.  Even the dredger can't get through.  The channel they thought they had dredged had filled up again. Lock keeper adamant.  So we are going back to Newark.  My train ticket for Friday now useless.  Also team coming out to take boat back will have to get new train tickets.  It will take longer to go back to Newark because against the flow of river.  Suki and I will be boat bound all day again.  Mike had to spend the day contacting towers we were due to ring at to cancel and contacting other towers to see if he can arrange ringing there.  Hoping to go up and down erewas canal and ring at 3 towers that way.  Finished book The Girl Who Played With Fire.  Then rang some handbells.  Finally got off boat at Hazleford lock at 5.30 and had lovely 4 mile walk along the trent valley way which runs alongside the river all the way to Gunthorpe lock. Suki loved it too. Had time for a pint of Marstons before boat turned up at lock. Had to sit outside as no dogs allowed but by then it was a beautiful evening. Got to press the buttons to operate lock as had key and got there just before boat did.  Had another lovely curry cooked by jj with aloo gobi and ciabatta nan bread.

(click here for short, 2-page version pdf!) Doesn’t time fly! It seems no time at all since I was composing last year’s letter. What a gorgeous summer we had - the heatwave seemed to go on for ever and I spent many a happy hour sitting in the garden - as did Suki! As expected, Mary (Mike’s mum) passed away on 13th December last year - nearly 5 weeks after she first took to her bed and stopped eating.  Everyone at Tracey House was so good with her, caring for her and keeping her comfortable. They also took care of everything at the end which was very helpful. We were fortunate to be able to have the funeral before Christmas so it wasn’t hanging over until the new year. Mary had written down her wishes for hymns and readings and even a potted history for the eulogy! It was very easy to organise, even from a distance. She was well known at the church and there was a good attendance - I was particularly glad that her 90-year old friend, who had been her bridesmaid, was ab

Saturday 1 February

Mike went off ringing QPs and I went to Denham to do 7-mile Colne Valley circular walk I had stumbled across when researching New Year's Day canal walk.  Walking by 9.10.  Took me four and a half hours because went slightly wrong in the woods and then decided to research possible short cut for future, and also because unable to get under railway bridge at Ickenham due to floods so had to do long detour.  Lovely morning - clear and sunny and not too cold although the wind was somewhat chill.  Underfoot was extremely muddy and often deep in water - luckily boots were up to it.  Had blisters under both feet by the end.  Also found I had burrs sticking to my ear muffs - but only after I had been talking to people whilst completely unaware of this. Got home and changed bedding and did washing.  Then had lovely hot shower and got into comfies for the evening.  Did cross stitch and watched England being beaten by France at Rugby in the last few minutes.  Had pate from Son Ferrer market fo

Roving Ringers Reunion Weekend 21-22 Feb

Lee and Emma picked up Suki on Friday afternoon - which left us clear on Saturday to just get up and go.  We were going to listen to the Everest book on the way up to Huntingdon - but we couldn't get the phone audio to work through the bluetooth on the car, even though the phone was shown as paired.  So we listened to an interesting programme on the Bach Magnificat instead.  We set off a bit late but got to the first tower at Godmanchester about 10.20 am and Hal immediately came down and carried Mike up.  I tried to ring there but they were too heavy for me and the ropes were new and springy so I didn't carry on.  The next tower was St Ives - which was a ground floor ring with an awful lot of rope, so I didn't ring there but stayed around in the body of the church chatting.  I walked back to the town before the session finished and had a happy time browsing round the shops and farmers marker.  I got myself some nail varnish - another first shock horror!!  At the market I bo
